One Person’s 'Trash' is Another One’s Treasure

Help make an impact within your own closet.

As a neat freak who adores fashion, closet cleaning is my kryptonite. I’ll admit that it can be a challenging task to let go of clothes (even if you no longer wear them), but I’ve adjusted to think of it as a chance to refresh and renew.

Why not do so in a way that’s sustainably friendly?

A few years back, a friend introduced me to Poshmark, a social network where you can buy fashion goods from other people’s closets and sell pieces of your own. After falling into a rabbit hole of designer products and adorable gently used items, I was hooked. I’ve always been a savvy spender and look around for the best deal before pulling the trigger. Poshmark is full of high-quality, secondhand clothing at prices that are difficult to resist (and you can always negotiate prices too!).

During my time as a college student (with a bit of a shopping obsession), I worked part-time in retail so I could always have a little extra spending money. I created a Poshmark account and soon was making cash on top of that while seamlessly turning it into new (to me) clothes.

Instead of just focusing on my own closet, I started helping others clean out their closets in exchange for listing items they no longer needed on Poshmark too. If you visit my Poshmark closet today, you’ll find an unusually large amount of men’s clothing (thanks Dad) because of this reason.

Each time you sell a piece on Poshmark, the process of earning money is quick and easy! After printing a free priority-shipping label, packaging up the goods and dropping it off at a local post office, your job is done. Once delivery is confirmed, 80% of the purchase price is then deposited into your account (Poshmark will take out 20%). From there, you can transfer the money to a bank account or put it towards buying something else on Poshmark!

If you haven’t already guessed, I always end up buying something else.

While I’ll be the first to admit that buying something shiny, new and cheap from a fast-fashion retailer is tempting, platforms like Poshmark provide the opportunity to shop for trendy pieces in a more sustainable way and reuse items that might otherwise be thrown away. As a typical consumer, you’ll throw away an average of 70 pounds of clothing each year (it’s true, look it up). Fashion recycling is one of the simplest ways to reduce that waste!

If you’re feeling creative, consider upcycling your clothing too! Take an old or damaged piece and transform it into something new (I do this a ton with jeans). Instead of purchasing a new pair of fringe jeans, I created my own with a pair I hadn’t worn in years. Now, I wear these “new” fringe jeans all of the time!

It’s ok to take small steps to try to make an impact. You have to take a step before you leap.

Always,

Alina Ann
